12 Snuggle-Worthy Organic And Sustainable Bedding Brands

by | Dec 16, 2020

Ahh, the bedroom. That inviting space where, with luck and good hygiene, our dreams can come true. Our most intimate moments transpire in bed. It’s the perfect place to care for ourselves, our bedmate(s), and our planet. Choosing organic sheets and sustainable bedding can alight your path to planetary bliss. I’m here to show you how.

I mean, that is, the part about choosing environmentally conscious bedding.

I’ve been sleeping on organic cotton sheets longer than most. As a bootstrapped entrepreneur building my first sustainable furniture and furnishings company (Vivavi) over a decade ago, I secretly slept in my showroom.

It was in New York City. I couldn’t afford both an apartment and a showroom, so for years, I combined them. The only downside was that my sales manager insisted I had to “make my bed” each morning before we opened, which I wasn’t thrilled about but went along with.

Here’s a Sundance Channel feature segment from 2008 filmed in my former Vivavi showroom/home (along with some backstory on Lazy Environmentalist).

At the time, few sustainable bedding brands existed. There were offerings from AreaAnna SovaABC Carpet & Home, and Coyuchi.

Designer Carmel Campos had launched Loop Organic’s crisp bedding aesthetic. Here’s a 2008 interview Carmel gave to Marisa Belger (my editor for both Lazy Environmentalist Books) describing the inspiration behind her sustainable bedding brand.

Fast-forward to today, and we are witnessing the mainstreaming of organic bedding. You can find great options at major retailers including West Elm, Pottery BarnTarget, L.L. Bean, Garnet Hill, Crate & Barrel.

Huckberry, that bastion of all things cool, artisan, and independent, recently introduced a stellar line of organic bedding from niche brand Upstate.
